We use music for all sorts of reasons. We use it wake up, to get excited and motivated. We use it to escape and change moods. If music can help pump you up, can it also help wind you down? How well does ambient music actually help you sleep? It turns out, music can help you fall asleep much faster, and get better sleep, as long as you set it up properly.

Studies have shown that listening to ambient music to help you sleep absolutely works. However, the key is finding music that is the exact opposite of what you usually listen to. For music to help you sleep it has to make you disengage, not keep you interested. The sort of music that you normally listen to throughout the day will keep your mind active, and keep you awake, versus music you never heard before.

Here are some tips to using music to help you sleep.

  • When choosing ambient music to fall asleep to, look for similar rhythms, beats and volumes, so one song fades into the next and your brain won’t be jarred by any significant changes.
  • Keep your playback device at a distance, and use a volume leveler if your device has one. This will keep you from wanting to constantly adjust volume or find another track.
  • Limit the length of your playlist so it doesn’t run too long, or set a timer so it shuts off automatically. This will reduce the risk the chances of waking up once after you’ve fall asleep.

Finally, don’t expect music to be an instant sleep cure immediately. The key to falling asleep is repetition that causes your body to relax. Introducing a new element like ambient music for sleeping may not help at first simply because it’s new, but once your body gets used to it, it should help long term.
