Nowadays, your computer is the source of much of your entertainment. You can watch your favorite TV shows, listen to your music, or play the hot new video game. It provides a means of escape without ever leaving your home.

While internal speakers on your desktop or built-in to your laptop are okay, they might not give you the best experience. You might be missing critical components of your media.

You want to be able to hear every note, every line of dialog, and every footstep, especially in the highly-competitive world of online gaming.

So, how do you go about finding the best computer speakers for your set-up? We’ll walk you through the reasons why and give you some tips about what makes a truly great computer speaker system.

What to Look For When Shopping for Computer Speakers?

Before you order that sale-priced set of PC speakers that appear to be a fast solution, ask yourself this:

“What will I use these for the most?”

Immediately follow that question with, “will these computer speakers work for more than one thing?

We know not all computer speakers are created equal. We use our laptops, desktops, PCs, and tablets for more than work, especially these days. You likely use your desktop or laptop to watch TV at some point or to listen to music or podcasts while you’re working. You may be a Twitch rock star.

In any case, you need a multifunctional speaker set-up that can provide crystal-clear sound for whatever you’re doing.

What Makes Klipsch PC Speakers the Best?

When Klipsch set out to create the new ProMedia 2.1 THX® Certified Computer Speaker system, it wasn’t with the intent of just creating great speakers for gaming. It was to create the best computer audio experience period.

To do that, Klipsch couldn’t just create a small set of powered speakers. They wanted to design the smallest footprint Klipsch speakers we’d ever made. This meant taking one of the most important developments in audio reproduction, the Klipsch Tractrix Horn, and finding a way to incorporate it into a speaker cabinet that’s only 8.5” tall.

Spoiler alert: It happened. It’s called the Klipsch MicroTractrix® Horn and you’ll hear it loud and clear on these new speakers. Paired with a 200-watt amplifier and a 6.5" subwoofer, the Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX® Certified Computer Speakers create an immersive sound experience where you'll hear everything, right down to a person’s breathing.

Why do I need Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX® Certified Computer Speakers?

“Klipsch THX computer speakers combine Klipsch sonic signature and technology with THX-certified performance,” says Senior Product Manager for Connected Audio Michael Buratto. “It provides a listening experience like no other desktop system on the market.”

That includes a THX® certification. THX was developed by legendary Star Wars creator George Lucas and audio pioneer Tomlinson Holman, it was born out of his dissatisfaction with the haphazard quality of projection and audio as implemented in movie theaters around the country. The pair figured the reason a movie could look and sound great in one cinema, but absolutely terrible in another was a lack of a common, and high-quality technical standard. So, they did what any passionate innovator would do - create a new standard and called it THX® (based on the name of a student film Lucas made at USC and “Tomlinson Holman’s eXperiment”).

A THX® Certification means what you’re getting has been tested a bunch. For video products, like TVs and projectors, the THX® standard specifies levels for the accuracy of color reproduction and image sharpness. Speakers, on the other hand, must pass more than 2,000 tests to verify the levels of seven different attributes, including sensitivity, impedance, and frequency response.

If a product doesn’t meet the seven benchmarks, it will be sent back to the manufacturer for further modification and testing. THX® strives to give you a true plug-and-play experience, with top-notch audio quality settings already in place when you take the speakers out of the box.

Essentially, a THX® Certified product is a guaranteed amazing sound experience.

How does the subwoofer work with the satellite speakers to create that experience?

The subwoofer will reproduce the low frequencies of your music or movies,” explains Buratto. ”In order to keep the satellite speaker compact and easy to position on your desktop, they’re fairly limited in their ability to reproduce the deep bass we’re used to in a hi-fi system, so the subwoofer handles those frequencies.

Why would someone get computer speakers over a sound bar?

Computer speakers are discrete left and right channels for a much wider near-field listening soundstage than a soundbar,” says Buratto. “This also helps with ease of placement and position where a very large, wide soundbar can be cumbersome on a desktop.

Is there an advantage when gaming with computer speakers?

Buratto says computer speakers can give an immersive, detailed, latency-free gaming experience without the ear fatigue that can result from long gaming sessions wearing headphones.

What it comes down to is this: a computer speaker system is a necessity nowadays for anyone spending more than a few hours a day in front of a screen, whether it be large or small. Giving yourself the option of a truly amazing sound experience just makes good sense. Whether you’re gaming or just catching up on something binge-worthy, you won’t go wrong with a great pair of computer speakers.
